About Puzzle Mosaic

Puzzle takes the familiar idea of a maze and gives it limits. Instead of an endless network of possible routes, each motif occupies its own territory. The line turns, retreats and changes direction, but never escapes the space it has been given.

There is a distant reference to oriental lacquer work in the idea. I have always liked the way decorated boxes can concentrate so much visual information into a small area. Their ornament is often intricate, yet the edges remain important. The decoration understands exactly where it belongs.

That relationship between complexity and containment became the starting point for Puzzle. The pattern has plenty of movement, but nowhere to go. This gives the maze a different character. It becomes less about finding an exit and more about enjoying the route itself.

Mosaic brings another quality to the idea. Curves are unnecessary. A sequence of small squares can turn a corner, hesitate and head elsewhere with remarkable economy. The restrictions of the grid become part of the drawing rather than something to overcome.

There is something satisfying about a pattern that sets its own rules and then stays within them. Puzzle allows the eye to wander while the geometry remains firmly contained. Repeated across a surface, those individual enclosures begin to form a larger order. What starts as a collection of separate puzzles gradually becomes a pattern about boundaries, diversion and the simple pleasure of getting pleasantly lost.
