About Arcade Mosaic
I’ve always liked the shadows that architecture creates, particularly when the sun catches a building at just the right angle. An ordinary archway or a recessed window can suddenly become something wonderfully graphic. Sometimes the shadow is more interesting than the building itself.
Arcade came from playing around with that idea. I wanted to capture a little of that relationship between light and shade, but without making anything too literal. Just a simple motif with a hint of architecture behind it.
There’s a touch of mid century design in there too. Those wonderful decorative screens, concrete blocks and metal grilles that made even the most practical buildings interesting. They often had a graphic quality that feels just as relevant today.
What I particularly like about Arcade is how much you can do with so little. Change the placement of the motifs and you can arrive at something quite different. Some arrangements feel orderly and architectural, while others become more playful and abstract.
It’s quite easy to lose sight of the original inspiration, which I rather like. The idea of light and shade is still there, but the pattern has taken on a life of its own.
