The Material
There is a lot to enjoy about working with tiny pieces of marble. At just 10 × 10mm, the individual squares are small enough to build quite elaborate patterns, almost like drawing with stone. The extra detail opens up all sorts of possibilities, particularly when exploring designs that would lose some of their character in a larger format.

This collection takes its inspiration from quite a mixed bag of sources. There are echoes of woven textiles, traditional ornament and bold graphic design. Some patterns have the intricacy of embroidery or tapestry, while others feel closer to prints and geometric artwork. It is an interesting mix, with plenty of room for both elaborate decoration and simpler, more playful ideas.
Of course, marble adds another dimension. Its little variations in colour and veining bring warmth to even the most precise geometry. Two pieces of the same stone are rarely identical, and that natural irregularity is part of the enjoyment. It gives the patterns a character that would be quite different in a completely uniform material.
The 10mm format is particularly good at capturing the finer details. Small changes in direction, delicate outlines and more complicated shapes all become easier to explore. There is also an interesting relationship between the tiny squares and the imagery they make together. Something quite intricate can grow from a collection of very simple parts.
And perhaps that is where the real charm of these mosaics lies. They bring together the decorative possibilities of pattern with the wonderful individuality of natural stone. The result is a collection that feels equally comfortable with historical references, graphic experimentation and a little bit of fun.
