About Chain Mosaic

Chains have a wonderful graphic quality. They’re familiar, functional objects, yet there’s something quite decorative about the way their links connect. Think of the difference between a heavy industrial chain and a delicate piece of jewellery. The principle is exactly the same, but scale changes everything.

Chain plays around with that contrast. There’s a hint of industrial design in the geometry, although the enlarged links could just as easily belong to an oversized necklace. It has a slightly playful quality, taking something ordinary and giving it a rather different personality.

I also like the idea of making a pattern feel more individual. Chain has two related motifs that can work independently, sit alongside one another or mingle together. Each arrangement has its own character, from something quite orderly to a more decorative composition.

There’s a lovely connection with jewellery here too. Chains are rarely just about the links themselves. It’s how they’re arranged, combined and worn that makes them personal. A simple chain can become something quite elaborate without changing its basic ingredients.

The same thinking runs through this design. Two modest motifs, a little freedom in their arrangement and plenty of room to make something your own.
