About Invaders Mosaic

Invaders goes straight back to the video arcades of the 1980s. Dark rooms, glowing screens and rows of machines provided an irresistible destination for an entire generation.

Games were remarkably simple by current standards. Yet they could consume hours. A handful of pixels became spaceships, aliens and entire worlds. Imagination filled the considerable gaps left by the technology.

Then there was the high-score table. Getting your initials onto it mattered. Better still was reaching the top and leaving them there. Three letters offered a small but surprisingly potent form of teenage status.

That early visual language now carries an unexpected nostalgia. Pixel graphics once represented the limits of digital technology. Today, their blocky simplicity has become instantly recognisable in its own right.

Invaders borrows from that moment with a degree of mischief. Rendered in natural stone, the reference jumps between two very different worlds. Ancient geological material meets the crude digital graphics of an arcade machine.

It is difficult to take Invaders entirely seriously. That is rather the point.
