Custom Surface Design
Some projects call for something beyond an existing collection. An original pattern, a particular colour combination or a decorative surface developed around the character of a space.
I work with architects, interior designers and developers to create individual designs for architectural projects. Drawing on my experience with mosaic, terrazzo, ceramic tiles and other decorative materials, I explore how pattern, geometry and colour can contribute to a wider architectural idea.
My approach combines an interest in ornament and visual composition with a practical understanding of materials and manufacturing. This allows me to develop ideas that respond to the character of a project while considering how they might translate into a finished surface.
A Design for the Project
Each commission begins with a conversation about the space, the materials and the intentions behind the scheme. Sometimes the starting point is a particular architectural detail, a historical reference or a colour palette. Other projects offer an opportunity to explore an entirely new decorative language.
The work might involve a bespoke mosaic pattern, a terrazzo composition, an original tile design or an adaptation of an existing motif. Depending on the project, I can develop initial concepts, explore colour and pattern variations, and prepare design artwork for discussion with the appointed manufacturer.
I particularly enjoy projects where decorative detail forms an integral part of the architecture, rather than an addition considered at the end.
Every commission has its own requirements. We agree the scope of the design work, development stages and intended usage rights before the project begins.
Discuss a Project
I welcome enquiries from architects, interior designers and developers considering original surface designs for residential, commercial and hospitality projects.
Whether you have a detailed brief or an idea still taking shape, please get in touch to discuss your project.
