About Mayan Mosaic

Mayan looks towards the remains of ancient Mesoamerican architecture. Not the monument as it once stood, but the footprint left behind. Walls become lines, chambers become voids and an entire building returns to geometry.

There is a strange power in archaeological plans. They reduce immense structures to something almost graphic, while still carrying the presence of what once occupied the site. A few lines can suggest temples, ceremonial spaces and cities long after much of their architecture has disappeared.

These forms found another life during the twentieth century. Pre-Columbian architecture fascinated modernist designers, particularly its mass, stepped geometry and powerful abstraction. Ancient forms suddenly looked remarkably compatible with modern ones.

Mayan sits somewhere within that exchange. Its geometry could belong to an archaeological drawing or a piece of late mid-century design. The distance between them feels surprisingly small.

Natural stone makes that connection particularly satisfying. The material already carries age, variation and its own sense of time. Here, an imagined architectural ruin becomes pattern, while traces of something much older remain quietly present.
