About Star Mosaic

Star owes something to the woven geometry of Kilim rugs. I have always liked their directness. Pattern comes from the structure of the weave, yet it never feels rigid.

There is also a wonderful economy to these textiles. Simple geometric forms repeat, meet and change direction. From a limited vocabulary comes an extraordinary variety of pattern.

Star takes some of that thinking and moves it into stone. That shift in material changes the character of the idea. Something associated with softness, movement and portability suddenly gains permanence.

The reference does not need to remain literal. What matters is the underlying language of repeated diamonds, stepped lines and strong geometric relationships. These ideas have travelled remarkably well across cultures, materials and centuries.

In marble, that familiar woven language becomes quieter and more architectural. The natural variation of the stone also loosens the geometry slightly. It prevents the pattern from becoming too perfect.

Perhaps that is where Star finds its character. It carries the memory of something woven, while belonging completely to the surface beneath it.
