About Folk Mosaic
Folk returns to the language of Ukrainian stitchwork, where geometry, symbolism and decoration have been intertwined for generations. These patterns have a directness that comes from their construction. Complex ideas emerge from a grid, with every stitch contributing to a much larger whole.
That relationship makes embroidery particularly interesting when translated into mosaic. Both disciplines build pattern piece by piece. Neither relies on a continuous drawn line. Curves become stepped, diagonals find their way through a grid, and repetition allows relatively simple marks to develop into something unexpectedly elaborate.
Folk takes that shared logic and changes the scale. What might traditionally belong to a piece of cloth becomes an expansive decorative field. The shift gives the pattern a different presence, but its folkloric character remains unmistakable.
There is also a particular confidence to Ukrainian embroidery. Flowers and geometric forms sit happily together, while repetition creates richness rather than uniformity. Decoration carries cultural memory, yet the underlying visual language remains remarkably immediate.
Translated from thread into glass, Folk moves away from its textile origins without losing their spirit. The technique changes and the scale grows, but the pleasure still comes from the same place: small units of colour gathering together to create something far more expressive.
