Fade
The Colours

About Fade Mosaic
Fade explores ombré as movement rather than simply a transition between tones. Colour gathers, disperses and gathers again, creating waves that seem to travel across the surface. The change is gradual, but the repetition gives it a distinct pulse.
The idea becomes more compelling when those waves move in opposing directions. One sequence grows stronger as another recedes, producing a continual exchange between colour and background. There is no abrupt boundary between them. Instead, each appears to dissolve into the next before beginning again.
Yet the mosaic itself never changes direction. The 20 × 10 mm pieces retain the same orientation throughout, providing a constant against which the colour can move. That distinction matters. The geometry remains disciplined while the tonal composition appears far more fluid.
Turning the design through ninety degrees changes its character again. A vertical fade encourages the eye upwards and gives the colour a sense of rise and fall. Horizontally, those same transitions spread across the surface more like a succession of bands. The principle remains identical, but orientation changes how the movement is perceived.
Ombré has an appealing uncertainty because it avoids the obvious moment when one colour becomes another. Fade takes advantage of that ambiguity. At certain points the individual tones are easy to identify. Elsewhere they seem to merge, leaving the eye to decide where one ends and the next begins.
