About Links Mosaic
Links explores connection as something cumulative. A single link has limited purpose, but joined to another it becomes part of a chain. Strength comes from repetition and dependency, with each element relying on its neighbour to make the whole work. It is a simple principle, yet one that appears repeatedly in design, engineering and the way we construct things.
The chain is particularly compelling because its strength comes from articulation rather than mass. It can bend, coil and respond to movement while remaining connected. That flexibility gives it a very different character from a solid line. It suggests continuity without rigidity, which makes it a natural reference for the linear family of patterns.
There is a broader idea here about how we perceive a line. We tend to think of it as a continuous mark, drawn from one point to another. A chain challenges that assumption. Its line is actually a sequence of individual components, with the connection between them creating continuity. Remove those relationships and the line disappears.
Links takes that principle into pattern. Its starting point is not simply the familiar shape of a chain, but the logic behind one. Individual parts gain purpose through repetition, while connection gives them direction and strength.
It is an idea that feels particularly appropriate to mosaic. The material itself depends upon accumulation, with many small pieces becoming a single surface. Links makes that relationship part of the design language, turning connection from a means of construction into the subject itself.
