Net

Net looks towards one of the simplest forms of open weave: the fishing net. Lengths of cord become a working surface through regular knotting, with the spaces between them remaining as important as the material itself.

It is a familiar sight around working harbours and fishing towns. Nets piled on quaysides have their own character, particularly where repeated knots interrupt long lines of cord. Their construction is practical, economical and remarkably enduring.

That coastal reference gave Net its starting point. I wanted a more open pattern than the denser, knitwear-related designs within the collection. The structure of a fishing net offered a way to reduce the amount of pattern without losing the sense of connection.

Net keeps the motif small and the weave open. Its origins lie in an object where emptiness serves a purpose. That seemed a good place to start when looking for a little more space.
