The Colours

About Rattan Mosaic

Rattan comes from the woven café chairs that appear on pavements and terraces across Europe. Their patterns often use several colours, threaded together through relatively simple weaving.

It is the colour combinations that stay with me. A few strands can produce surprisingly lively relationships as they pass over and under one another. No single colour dominates because each depends on those around it.

That interplay gave Rattan its starting point. The reference is not natural rattan itself, but the coloured synthetic weaves often used for café furniture. Their charm comes from taking an ordinary, practical object and giving it a little personality.

These chairs also carry a strong association with travel. They belong to streets, squares, cafés and the everyday ritual of sitting outside with a coffee. Their woven patterns become part of that familiar visual landscape.

Rattan borrows some of that informality. Colour crosses colour, layers accumulate, and a straightforward weave becomes unexpectedly joyful.
