Folk XL

Folk XL plays with an assumption we rarely question: that certain patterns belong at a certain scale. Traditional stitched motifs are usually intimate by nature. Their character comes from small marks accumulating patiently across cloth.

Here, that relationship is deliberately overturned. A motif with its roots in folk stitch is enlarged into a generous repeat, changing something familiar into a much bolder proposition. The reference remains, but its delicacy gives way to scale and presence.

There is something appealing about that shift. Enlargement exposes the underlying geometry of traditional needlework, revealing how remarkably graphic many of these patterns are. What once depended upon tiny stitches can suddenly hold its own across an entire surface.

The striped ground introduces another idea. Rather than allowing the motif to sit against a neutral field, it gives the background its own identity. Pattern sits over pattern, creating a layered effect that brings depth without resorting to shading or illusion.

Glass takes the design another step away from its textile origins. The 10mm tesserae retain something of the incremental nature of stitch, yet gloss and saturated colour make the result unmistakably different.

Folk XL is less about reproducing a traditional pattern than changing the way it is encountered. Something small becomes expansive, while something familiar becomes just strange enough to see again.
