Terrazzo
The Material
Botticino takes colour in a gentler direction. Grey greens, pale blues and dusty mauves bring more personality to the terrazzo palette, but nothing becomes overly bright or insistent. The colours have a slightly vegetal quality, sitting somewhere between garden, landscape and the beautifully difficult-to-name shades found in natural materials.
Botticino marble runs through the collection as the common aggregate. It is an interesting stone to use in this way because its colour is surprisingly elusive. There is warmth in the creamy beige, but also a cool grey undertone that changes according to its surroundings. Put it against green and one character emerges; move into blue, mauve or thistle and something slightly different happens.
This ability to move between warm and cool colours gives the collection much of its ease. The marble never creates an abrupt contrast with the cement ground. Instead, the two settle comfortably together, with the natural variation of the stone creating small changes in tone across the surface.
The colours themselves were deliberately kept away from the obvious. Greens are muted and slightly grey, blues are soft rather than aquatic, while mauve introduces an earthier, more unexpected note. They bring colour into an interior without immediately defining it. A Botticino terrazzo can be distinctly green, blue or thistle and still behave with much of the versatility we normally associate with a neutral.
There is a quiet pleasure in that ambiguity. Even the marble resists being described as simply warm or cool, beige or grey. The collection occupies much the same territory, moving between colour and neutral without needing to choose one or the other.
Botticino was never intended to shout. It was an opportunity to make terrazzo more colourful while keeping the palette easy to live with and open to other materials. The result is a collection of nuanced colours held together by a marble that seems particularly comfortable in their company.
