The Material
Monochromes approaches terrazzo through a deliberately restricted palette. White, grey and black marble aggregates are paired with three cement grounds, creating a compact range built around tone rather than colour.
The collection is organised as a measured system. Three aggregate mixes, Chiaro, Medio and Scuro, sit across three cement shades: Ash, Cinder and Char. Together, they create a grid of nine combinations that moves gradually from light to dark.
That structure gives Monochromes its use. Rather than presenting nine unrelated surfaces, the collection works as a tonal scale. Each terrazzo occupies a distinct position within it, allowing subtle shifts in contrast, depth and intensity without leaving the monochrome spectrum.
The aggregates do much of the visual work. Chiaro introduces greater lightness, Medio creates a more balanced distribution, while Scuro increases contrast and definition. The cement ground then changes the relationship again. Ash keeps the overall composition open and pale, Cinder settles into the middle range, and Char gives the marble chips a darker, more graphic setting.
There is something universal about a monochrome palette. Without strong colour associations, attention moves towards proportion, texture, material and form. Black, white and grey can sit comfortably within very different architectural languages because they do not prescribe a particular interpretation.
I think of Monochromes as a small toolbox of cool neutrals. The collection provides a set of measured choices rather than a series of statements. Nine surfaces, three levels of aggregate and three depths of cement create a simple framework that makes tonal relationships easy to understand and, importantly, easy to use.
