Cortile
The Material
Cortile takes its cues from the decorative floors found throughout Italy and France, where relatively simple pieces of stone were arranged into patterns of surprising richness. There is something compelling about these floors because their geometry remains so easy to understand. Squares, circles and angled forms meet with purpose, yet the overall composition can become wonderfully intricate.
That same idea runs through Cortile. Two motifs provide the vocabulary, repeating and reconnecting to create a pattern with something of the character of parquet. There is order, certainly, but also movement. Lines appear to pass behind one another, shapes gather into larger forms and the eye can choose several different routes through the design.

These are geometries with history, although they carry it lightly. Similar ideas have appeared in marble floors, parquetry, decorative borders and architectural surfaces for centuries. What is interesting is how little effort they need to make the transition into the present. They don’t require simplifying or stripping back to become contemporary. Their proportions and repetition already have a graphic clarity that sits comfortably within modern interiors.
Terrazzo changes the conversation again. The precision of the cut shapes is filled with fragments of marble and natural variation, giving each section its own small differences. A strong contrast can emphasise the interlocking geometry, while colours closer in tone allow the pattern to emerge more gradually.
Perhaps this is why old floors remain such fertile territory for new pattern. Their appeal rarely rests on ornament alone. Beneath the decoration there is usually a beautifully resolved piece of geometry, and good geometry has very little interest in what century it belongs to.
Cortile borrows from that tradition without trying to recreate a particular floor. It takes a familiar way of organising shape and gives it another life in terrazzo, allowing something with a clear sense of history to look entirely at ease in the present.
