Geo Geo
Geo Geo brings the restless beauty of stone into contact with something altogether more deliberate. Marble, quartzite and onyx move freely beneath bold graphic forms, their veins and mineral clouds passing through a geometry that belongs firmly to the human imagination.
There is a pleasing modernity to the combination. Nature provides surfaces of almost ridiculous complexity, while we continue to draw circles, lines and perfect curves across them. Perhaps we simply can’t resist imposing a little geometry on the world. Here, that instinct becomes decorative.
The stone is sometimes recognisable and sometimes wonderfully ambiguous. Colour and scale loosen familiar associations, leaving fragments that might be geological, photographic or almost painterly. Against them, the geometry has a confidence of its own. Clean outlines sit comfortably beside all that natural movement without attempting to tame it.
I particularly enjoy the moments where the two seem to merge. A vein crosses a line at just the right point. A change in tone appears to belong to the geometry rather than the stone. Shapes emerge briefly from the confusion and then disappear again. These little coincidences give the surface much of its character.
There is something very contemporary about allowing such different visual languages to coexist. The natural and the artificial no longer need to be opposites. One can be precise, the other unruly, and the pleasure comes from seeing them together.
Geo Geo lives comfortably in that overlap. Part geology, part graphic invention, it takes the extraordinary patterns nature has already made and introduces a little human interference.
