Labyrinth
Labyrinth was partly inspired by the simple pleasure of drawing mazes. Lines wander across the page, routes appear to lead somewhere and the eye instinctively starts following them. There may be no destination, but that hardly seems to matter.
The patterns have that same quality. Geometry moves across the wall in paths, junctions and unexpected changes of direction, giving the eye somewhere to idle. Follow one line and it might disappear into another. Start again somewhere else and an entirely different route emerges. The longer you look, the more possibilities seem to appear.
There is order beneath all of this, although I rather like that it isn’t immediately obvious. The collection shares a common geometric language, giving even the more elaborate patterns a certain discipline. Within it, however, each design behaves differently. Some appear almost architectural, others more graphic, and occasionally the geometry seems to fold back on itself altogether.
Colour has a strong presence throughout. Bold combinations make the geometry more immediate, separating one plane from another and allowing unexpected shapes to jump forward. Quieter palettes change the reading completely, letting the same complexity settle into something more contemplative.
Perhaps that is the peculiar attraction of geometric pattern. The rules can be rigid while the experience of looking at it is anything but. Our eyes wander, make connections, lose them and start again. A wall becomes something to explore rather than simply a surface to look at.
Labyrinth doesn’t ask to be solved. It is quite content to let the eye get pleasantly lost.
