The Material
The 15mm format gives gold and marble an interesting sense of concentration. Each tessera is small, but neither material loses its identity. Instead, hundreds of individual pieces bring natural variation, geometry and flashes of gold together within a remarkably detailed surface.
Marble works beautifully at this scale because its markings become fragments. A vein may cross a single tessera before disappearing, while neighbouring pieces shift through subtle variations in colour and mineral character. The regular grid provides order, but the stone continually introduces differences within it.

Against this natural variation, gold has an immediate presence. Even small details can punctuate a pattern, picking out a line, defining a shape or creating a rhythm among the marble.
